My favorite forms of self-care lately.

Hi lovely friends! There’s been a lot of change lately (I will totally do a post on this soon, so stay tuned!) and I don’t know about you guys, but when things are kind of crazy, I turn to self-care routines to keep me feeling sane and on-track. I wanted to share some things that I’ve been loving lately in this post today!

Lighting a candle when I get home from work. This is such a little, easy thing I’ve been doing lately that makes such a difference to me when the weather starts to cool down. I love coming home, changing into comfy clothes (of course), lighting a couple of candles, and starting to prep dinner. It feels really meditative and relaxing to me.

Making time for a workout before work (waking up early). While this doesn’t feel like self-care when I first wake up…after about half an hour I usually feel fantastic. Based on when I normally get to work, I need to wake up at 5:30AM to get a good workout in before work. 5:30 is early, but I’ve been making the commitment during the week, and I feel SO much better for it. I don’t do well when I know that a workout is looming at the end of the day. I could do a whole separate post on tips for waking up early…but when it comes down to it, it’s a commitment you make to yourself. Remember how you feel AFTER your workout / meditation / time to yourself and that will be motivation enough to get your butt out of bed!

Making a warm drink before bed. While I’ve always had solid morning routines, there’s something soothing about having a routine to wind down before bed. Lately I’ve been making a warm cup of Four Sigmatic or a hot mug of tea, and reading before bed. This signals to my body that it’s time to wind down and get ready to sleep. I used to wind down with a glass of wine, but I actually have found that it’s the mere routine of making myself some kind of drink before bed that is what I crave.

Blocking my Sunday’s. SUNDAY IS SACRED. Let me repeat….Sunday is sacred!! For Dan and me, Sunday’s are the day where we completely block our time to wake up slowly, eat a delicious breakfast, move our bodies, and explore somewhere new. Your day might be Saturday, or Friday, or whatever works for you…but taking one day of the week to go about our routine casually and try something new has been revolutionary! This past Sunday we went apple picking, out to lunch, and to Target (lol). We watched a movie and cooked up a healthy dinner. There’s nothing that makes me happier than these moments to reconnect.

Taking the time to cook a nutritious and filling meal at the end of the day. Taking the culinary nutrition course has really pushed me outside of my comfort zone in regards to recipes and cooking in general, but when I get home from work, I love to light my candles and get to cooking a healthy dinner (or reheating leftovers). I love the ritual of spending the time to prepare delicious and nutritious food.

Reading a good book. Honestly, there’s no simple pleasure that makes me happier than reading a good book, especially to wind down before bed. I’m starting to set some boundaries with my phone and bedtime, so picking up my kindle to read before bed has been SO relaxing lately. It feels SO much better than scrolling through my phone. I’ve recently loved Girl Wash Your Face, and I just started White Teeth.

These simple forms of self care have been making me feel human the past month with so much change going on. What forms of self care have you been enjoying? Would love to hear in the comments below!

Xoxo,

Meg
